The Bauchi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development has called on communities to support survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) by breaking the culture of silence and providing safe spaces that encourage healing and recovery.
Speaking at an awareness event, a representative of the ministry, Habiba Adamu, stressed that survivors should never be blamed for their experiences. She explained that GBV is never the victim’s fault but often arises from abuse of power by individuals in positions of authority—whether in workplaces, schools, or communities.
Adamu emphasized that breaking the silence is the first step to recovery, noting that keeping quiet only prolongs suffering and may lead to further harm. She encouraged survivors to join support groups, which provide opportunities for healing, sharing experiences, and regaining self-worth.
She further highlighted the importance of seeking professional counseling to overcome trauma, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. According to her, therapy plays a vital role in helping survivors rebuild confidence, restore hope, and rediscover purpose in life.
The ministry also shared emergency contact numbers for organizations offering support services, including the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) – 08053481138, the Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable Children Agency – 08123418824, and Plan International Aspire Project – 08002200102. Other partners mentioned were UNFPA, UN Women, and WaterAid.
In an emotional testimony, a survivor of gender-based violence shared her personal experience, recalling how stigma nearly pushed her to the brink of despair.
“When I was abused, people stigmatized me, and I got to the point where I preferred death. Because of the situation I was in, I even developed heart problems. But when I came out openly to seek help, I can now take care of myself and even my children,” she said.
The Ministry of Women Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to raising awareness, creating safe platforms for survivors to speak out, and ensuring that every survivor receives the support they need to heal and rebuild their lives.
