The Bauchi State House of Assembly has urged the state government to re-establish the Science Secondary School in Dass Local Government Area as part of efforts to boost science and technology education and enhance socio-economic development.
The call followed the adoption of a motion presented by the Chief Whip, Hon. Musa Wakili Nakwada, representing Bogoro Constituency, and co-sponsored by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Dr. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Jamilu Umar Dahiru, alongside other lawmakers.
Leading debate on the motion, Nakwada noted that reviving the school would provide a conducive environment for students to excel in science-related disciplines, thereby producing a new generation of innovators and professionals.
The Assembly commended Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for upgrading the former Science Secondary School, Dass, into a College of Education Technical, describing the move as a significant step towards expanding access to technical and vocational education in the state.
Despite this development, lawmakers expressed concern over the absence of a dedicated science secondary school in Dass, describing it as a setback to the advancement of science education in the area. They recalled the institution’s past contributions to academic excellence and its role in producing notable graduates.
The House further observed that the lack of such a school in a local government with a recognised traditional institution highlights the need for sustained investment in educational infrastructure.
Consequently, the Assembly resolved to call on the executive arm of government to re-establish the Science Secondary School in Dass and ensure the provision of adequate funding, facilities, and personnel for its effective operation.
Lawmakers maintained that restoring the institution would complement existing educational initiatives and significantly contribute to human capital development in Bauchi State.
