Bauchi Rural Communities Trained on Solar-Powered Borehole Maintenance

By Melody Agwom Dauda

The Bauchi State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), in collaboration with WaterAid Nigeria and DP World, has conducted a two-day training for scheme operators and artisans on the operation and maintenance of solar-powered boreholes in Misau Local Government Area.

The training, part of a broader solar-powered boreholes project, aims to ensure the sustainability and long-term functionality of the facilities following donor investment.

Speaking at the event, RUWASSA Assistant Manager of Rural Water Supply, Musa Garba Bundot, said each borehole is fitted with a 10,000-litre capacity tank and can serve over 5,000 residents. He stressed that proper management, technical guidance, and community ownership are essential to keeping the facilities operational.

“The training is designed to equip participants with practical skills for minor repairs and routine maintenance, reducing dependence on donor agencies and the state government,” Bundot said. He added that participants are being taught to identify and fix common technical faults, while also being provided with essential tools and support systems to enhance efficiency.

Mashat Mallo, State Representative of WaterAid Nigeria, emphasized the importance of knowledge transfer and community engagement. He urged trainees to share their skills with other community members and provide regular feedback to local leaders and WASHCOM teams on borehole performance. “Accountability and collective responsibility are vital to the success of this initiative,” he said.

The training reflects a joint commitment by RUWASSA, development partners, and beneficiary communities to promote sustainable access to clean water in rural areas. With strengthened local capacity and active community ownership, the solar-powered boreholes project is expected to serve as a model for effective rural water management in Bauchi State.
