NSAP Celebrates Professor Emeritus S. T. Mbap: A Glorious Farewell to a Scholar and Trailblazer in Animal Production

By Muhammad Sani Muazu

The Nigerian Society for Animal Production, NSAP, has celebrated Professor Emeritus S. T. Mbap of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, Bauchi, describing him as a distinguished scholar, mentor, and trailblazer in animal production.

Professor Mbap, who has served in the Department of Animal Production at ATBU since the mid-1980s, is widely recognized for his impactful scholarship, stellar mentorship, and visionary leadership in Nigeria’s livestock sector.

During his career, Professor Mbap contributed significantly to research that shaped livestock management and veterinary interventions across the country. In 2024, he co-authored a pivotal study that highlighted the wastage of over 10,000 cattle foetuses discarded in Bauchi abattoirs between 2011 and 2017, providing essential data for promoting food security and improving slaughterhouse regulations.

The same year, he contributed to research on non-genetic factors affecting sheep body weight, which is critical for improving local breeds and enhancing farmers’ productivity. His research interests also extended to helminth prevalence in sheep, quail hatchability, and fertility in chickens, reflecting a consistent commitment to advancing animal production science in Nigeria.

As an active member of NSAP, Professor Mbap championed evidence-based practices in animal production and supported research dissemination and policy development to strengthen the livestock sector.

The President of NSAP, Professor O. J. Babayemi, described Professor Mbap as a pillar in the national and international livestock research community, whose decades of service have shaped policies, mentored countless students, and improved systems that support food security and sustainable farming in the country.

Under his guidance, the Department of Animal Production at ATBU expanded its focus beyond breeding and genetics to include animal health, product handling, and reproductive physiology, aligning with the mission of ATBU’s Faculty of Agriculture to blend research, teaching, and community development for national transformation.

As the NSAP and the academic community celebrate Professor Emeritus S. T. Mbap, they honor a legacy of unwavering dedication to research, education, and community service that has advanced both ATBU and the wider field of animal production in Nigeria.

Professor Mbap’s enduring contributions will continue to inspire a new generation of animal scientists committed to transforming Nigeria’s food systems, ensuring that his impact will be felt for many years to come.
