Youth inclusivity in policy formulation and decision-making has been identified as a critical driver for national development, economic growth and sustainable peace in Nigeria.
This formed part of deliberations at the North-East Youth Consultation on Nigeria’s National Youth Policy, convened by the Nigeria Youth SDGs Network (NGYouthSDGs) under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, with support from the Naija Youth Fund (NYFF). The event was held at the American Space, Professor Iya Abubakar Community Resource Centre, Bauchi, with the theme: “From Evidence to Action: Integrating Youth Realities into Nigeria’s National Youth Policy.”
Speaking at the consultation, the Bauchi State Chairman of the Civil Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA), Mr. Nicholas Oshojah Afeso, underscored the critical role young people play in policy development and governance. He identified insurgency, displacement, kidnappings, unemployment and psycho-social challenges as major barriers to effectively integrating youth realities into the National Youth Policy, particularly in the North-East.
Afeso stressed that meaningful youth inclusivity in national policy and decision-making processes is essential to guarantee the active participation of young people in state affairs and ensure that policies reflect their lived experiences.
In his remarks, the representative of the Bauchi State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development highlighted the importance of engaging young people in key government policies and programmes, noting that such involvement would enhance ownership and ensure that initiatives are responsive to their needs.
Also speaking, the Director of American Space, Bauchi, Nasir Umar Launi, expressed appreciation to participants for their valuable contributions and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to promoting youth-driven ideals and good governance.
In her closing remarks, the Bauchi State Lead and Youth Advisory Board Member, Jane-Manne Effiong, emphasized the need for young people to actively participate in politics as part of efforts to reshape the national narrative and influence policy outcomes.
The North-East consultation is one of three zonal engagements being organized by NGYouthSDGs, alongside the North-Central and South-South regions, to provide an inclusive platform for youths to share their experiences and contribute recommendations towards the development of a responsive and inclusive National Youth Policy.
