Bauchi Govt Sues Ex-Speaker Dogara On “Culpable Homicide,” 10 Other Charges Over Bogoro, Tafawabalewa Violence

Bauchi State Government has filed a legal suit bordering on culpable homicide and 10 other charges dwelling on disturbance of public peace and security in Bogoro and Tafawabalewa during the occasion of the 21st memorial anniversary of a Sayawa nation leader and crusader, Baba Gonto against former Speaker of House Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

Mr. Dogara and 28 others are joined in suit no BA/ BA/01/22 at the Bauchi State High Court by the government on 11-count charges.

A copy of the charges made available to reporters in Bauchi on Friday indicated that the state government alleged that the defendants conspired among themselves to cause bodily harm to people in the area in order to frustrate the progress of the memorial anniversary.

Mr Dogara had in correspondence addressed to the Inspector General of Police and Director-General Depart of State Security Services warned of impending violence should organisers of the 21st memorial anniversary of Sayawa freedom fighter, Baba Gontot continue with the event as planned.

As fate may have it, on Friday 31 December 2021 violence erupted in Bogoro and Tafawabalewa towns leading to the destruction of lives and property of innocent citizens.

The Emirs of Bauchi and Dass Alhaji Rilwanu Sulaimanu Adamu and Alhaji Usman Bilyaminu Othman were attacked with their official cars smashed, a development that sparked protests in Bauchi and Dass over the incident with youth groups in the area moving for revenge for their emirs.

The Violence in Bogoro and Tafawabalewa come after Bauchi State Police Command sent a team of police to the area.

“Pursuant to Sections 98 (1) & (2), 100 (b) and 103 (b) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Bauchi State, 2018. Count One: That you, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, male of Maitama, Abuja-FCT, Air Commodore Ishaku Komo (Rtd), male of Kaduna-Abuja Road, Kaduna, Kaduna State, Rev. Markus Musa, male of Tafawa Balewa Town, Peter Emmanuel, male of Tafawa Balewa Town, Ga’Allah Daniel, male of Tafawa Balewa Town, Iliya Emmanuel, male of Tafawa Balewa Town….

“On or about the 29th, 30 and/or 31st day of December 2021 agreed to do or cause to be done an illegal act to wit: you conspired amongst yourselves and others at large to incite the Youths of Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro Towns to disturb public peace by burning people’s houses, blocking access roads, physically attacking invited guests and other participants attending the 21. Memorial Anniversary and Book Launch of Late Baba Peter Gonto at Bogoro Town a destroy and burn all facilities provided for the occasion, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 96 and punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code Law of Bauchi State.

“On or about the 29th, 30th and/or 31st day of December 2021 agreed to do or cause to be done an illegal act to wit: you conspired amongst yourselves and others at large to commit the offence Mischief by Fire by burning people’s houses in Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro To during the 21″Year Memorial Anniversary and Book Launch of Late Baba Pe Gonto at Bogoro Town and to destroy and burn all facilities provided for the occasion, thereby committed an offence contrary to section 96 and punishable under section 97 of the penal code law of Bauchi state.

“On or about the 29,30th and/or 31st day of December 2021 agreed to do or cause to be done an illegal act to wit: you conspired amongst yourselves and others at large to commit the offence of Culpable Homicide during the Year Memorial Anniversary and Book Launch of Late Baba Peter Gonto at Bogoro Town and that you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 96 punishable under Section 97 of the Penal Code Law of Bauchi State,” the charges read in part.
