Bauchi Gov Renames Bogoro Secretariate After Baba Gonto

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has approved the naming of the Bogoro Local Government Council Secretariat after the late Zaar Legend, Baba Peter Gonto Mwari.

The Executive Chairman of the Council, Hon. Iliya Habila said the approval of the naming of the edifice followed a request he made to the Governor to that effect.

According to the Chairman, the Council had earlier passed a resolution for a request to the Governor to name the Secretariat after the late sage as a mark of honour 22 years after his death.

He explained that Peter Gonto, born in 1882 in Mwari village of Bogoro Local Government Area, led the struggle for the emancipation of the Zaar (Sayawa) ethnic nationalities up to 2000 when he died.

The Chairman further explained that during his non-violent struggles for freedom and social justice for his people, Peter Gonto carried other minority tribes in the area along to ensure inclusiveness.

The Chairman also stated that as the person who championed the course and provided the lee-way for civilisation and evangelism in both Tafaw Balewa and Bogoro Local Government Areas of the state, honouring him posthumously was the least anybody or group could do to him.

The Chairman appreciated the Governor for accepting the request of the Local Government, through their ward representatives; the Councillors, for the honour.

According to Iliya Habila, the approval also came with an added gesture as the Governor had also awarded the contract for the rehabilitation of the Secretariat which work was progressing steadily.

He said already, the edifice was wearing a new look and the staff was anxious and happy about the development.

“With the renovation going on, the security of lives and property would be further enhanced as the perimeter fencing of the Secretariat is being done for the first time since the creation of the Local Government over 20 years ago.”, he said.

The letter of approval issued by the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs reads:” Reference to your letter dated 9th December 2021 forwarded to the Office of His Excellency, the Executive Governor, Bauchi State seeking for the above underlined subject matter, I am directed to write and convey His Excellency’s approval for you to honour/name your Council Secretariat after the Late Patriarch, Baba Peter Gonto Secretariat as a symbol of modest honour and appreciation for his long early legacies in the Land”.

“On behalf of the Bauchi State Government, Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and the entire staff and good people of Bauchi State accept the esteemed congratulations, please”, the letter further contained.
