JALINGO – Governors of the North East subregion have resolved to deepen collaboration in tackling floods, food insecurity, and energy poverty, as part of renewed efforts to address critical challenges confronting the zone.
The resolution was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the 12th meeting of the North East Governors’ Forum (NEGF), held in Jalingo, Taraba State.
Presenting the communiqué, Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State acknowledged significant progress in the fight against insurgency but noted that humanitarian and infrastructural challenges remain.
With meteorological forecasts warning of severe floods in the months ahead, the forum urged proactive measures, including sensitization of residents in flood-prone communities. The governors further appealed to the Federal Government and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to support the reconstruction of vital infrastructure, particularly bridges that are central to the region’s connectivity and economy.
The forum also raised concerns over rising agricultural costs, warning of an impending food crisis if urgent steps are not taken. It called for increased subsidies to support farmers and emphasized the importance of preparations for dry season farming as a strategy to stabilize food production.
As part of efforts to enhance regional economic integration, the governors announced that the North East Trade Fair will be hosted in Maiduguri, Borno State, in December 2025.
On energy, the forum reiterated its commitment to addressing power deficits through solar energy initiatives and directed its Power and Energy Committee to develop a comprehensive subregional master plan.
