The Chairman of the Bauchi State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts (PAC), Hon. Mubarak Haruna, has dismissed allegations that the Committee is ineffective in handling audit matters, describing the claims as “false, baseless, and a deliberate attempt to blackmail the Bauchi State Government and the House of Assembly.”
Speaking to journalists in Bauchi, Hon. Haruna, who represents Jama’are Constituency, clarified his political stance, stating, “Let me categorically state that I am not a member of the ruling PDP, and I am neither planning nor attempting to join the PDP in any way. What I am saying today is not to please anyone, but to set the record straight.”
He explained that the allegations, particularly those linked to a recent newspaper report, were misleading and aimed at undermining the work of the Public Accounts Committee. According to him, “Since we assumed office, the Committee has diligently carried out its constitutional oversight responsibilities without fear or favour.”
Hon. Haruna disclosed that the Committee conducted oversight visits to ministries, departments, agencies, and local government councils, where relevant officials presented financial documents and records for examination. He stressed that, “After thorough investigation and scrutiny, we did not find any such figures or claims as alleged in the said report.”
Highlighting the Committee’s activities, he said, “The House, through the Public Accounts Committee, has reviewed audit reports, investigated financial irregularities, held public hearings with accounting officers, monitored the implementation of audit recommendations, and conducted budget defenses for the Offices of the Auditor-General.”
The PAC Chairman further revealed that issues raised in the Auditor-General’s report had been properly handled, noting that, “All audit queries and observations contained in the 2024 Auditor-General’s report have been adequately addressed in line with due process.”
He emphasized that the House of Assembly operates strictly within constitutional provisions, saying, “Any legitimate audit must follow established legal procedures and be presented through the appropriate channels. Until then, any document or narrative being circulated should be treated as mere speculation.”
Hon. Haruna commended the administration of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed for implementing resolutions of the House, adding, “The present administration is committed to prudence, transparency, and accountability, and as a House, we remain independent and guided by truth, due process, and constitutional responsibility.”
