The Bauchi State Government has announced plans to partner with the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences as part of efforts to establish a specialised mining institution in Alkaleri Local Government Area.
The proposed institution, to be known as the Mining Institute Alkaleri, Bauchi State (MIABAS), is being driven by a Central Working Committee constituted by Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.
The disclosure followed an inspection tour and study visit by members of the committee to the Jos-based institute, aimed at gaining practical insights into the operational framework of a similar establishment.
The visit, according to officials, focused on key areas such as infrastructure development, curriculum design and institutional management, which are critical to the successful take-off of the proposed institute.
The committee, chaired by the Commissioner for Natural Resources Development, Maiwada Muhammad Bello, comprises industry experts, academics, representatives of relevant ministries and other stakeholders in the mining sector.
Speaking during the visit, the Director-General of the institute, Suleiman Bolaji Hassan, stressed that the establishment of a functional mining institute requires strong technical expertise, sustained professional input, and access to modern equipment and facilities.
He commended the Bauchi State Government for what he described as a forward-looking initiative, noting that the proposed institute would contribute significantly to the development of skilled manpower for Nigeria’s growing mining industry.
Hassan also pledged the institute’s support in providing guidance and sharing its experience to ensure the successful establishment of the new institution.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Bauchi State Ministry of Natural Resources Development, Ibrahim Mato Suleiman, who led the delegation, expressed appreciation to the institute for hosting the team.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the project, citing the support of the commissioner and Governor Mohammed, and noted that the initiative aligns with the state’s economic diversification agenda aimed at harnessing its solid mineral potential.
Stakeholders in the sector have observed that the establishment of MIABAS could position Bauchi State as a major hub for mining education and innovation in northern Nigeria.
The proposed institute is expected to offer specialised training in mineral exploration, mining engineering, environmental management and geosciences, while also attracting investment, promoting research and supporting global best practices in mining operations.
