By Muhammad Sani Muazu

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sa’adu Zungur University branch, has announced the suspension of its total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike, which commenced on November 29, 2024.

This decision was reached during an emergency congress meeting held on December 14, 2024, at the Yuli Campus of the university. The congress followed successful negotiations with the Visitor to the University, Governor of Bauchi State, resulting in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the union and the state government.

In a press release Signed by Comrade Awwal Hussain Nuhu, Chairperson, and Comrade Yahaya Yakubu, Assistant Secretary, ASUU highlighted key developments that informed its decision. The union commended its members for their resilience and solidarity during the industrial action. It also acknowledged the Governor’s willingness to engage directly with the union and his proactive efforts in addressing their grievances.

The union noted that the governor not only recognized the concerns raised by its members but also took immediate steps to resolve them. ASUU described these actions as reflective of the government’s commitment to advancing education in Bauchi State.

Consequently, the congress unanimously resolved to suspend the strike with immediate effect, directing all academic staff to resume their duties and continue contributing to the development of the university community.

While the strike has been called off, ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the implementation of the agreements reached to ensure that they are honored.
