L-PRES Project Unveils Development Plans for Ningi Local Government Area

By Muhammad Sani Muazu

The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project has announced ambitious plans to boost livestock development and infrastructure in Ningi Local Government Area, Bauchi State. The announcement was made during a community engagement meeting with stakeholders, including traditional leaders and local council officials, organized to sensitize the public about the project’s objectives and benefits.

Speaking at the event, Musa Adamu One, the Bauchi State Project Coordinator, described L-PRES as a World Bank-funded six-year initiative dedicated exclusively to livestock development. “This project is the first of its kind in history that focuses solely on livestock. It aims to improve livestock productivity, resilience, and commercialization. It is being implemented in 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja,” he stated.

Adamu One commended Governor Bala Abdulkadir Muhammad for his commitment to ensuring Bauchi State’s participation in the project. “The governor has demonstrated his commitment by paying four years’ worth of the annual ₦20 million counterpart funds, enabling the state to benefit fully from this initiative,” he noted.

Highlighting plans for 2025, Adamu One revealed that the project intends to construct a state-of-the-art veterinary clinic and a modern abattoir in Ningi Local Government Area. Additionally, the project has proposed the drilling of a borehole in the cattle market to address water needs for both livestock and residents. “All these projects belong to the community. We are here to sensitize you on how to take ownership for their sustainability, as that is what the World Bank wants to achieve,” Adamu One emphasized.

Nasiru Zakarai Ningi, Chairman of Ningi Local Government, expressed excitement about the project and its potential to address pressing challenges in the area. “Rehabilitating our slaughter slab has been part of my blueprint, and I am very happy that L-PRES will take this burden off us. We are also thrilled about the planned borehole for the cattle market, which will alleviate the water scarcity faced by our people and livestock,” he said.

The chairman commended the Bauchi State Government for fulfilling its financial obligations to the project and called on the community to play its part in ensuring the sustainability of the interventions. “Whatever amount the government spends on this project, if the community does not take ownership, it will not be sustainable. I urge all stakeholders in Ningi Local Government Area to take care of these projects once executed,” he added.

Nasiru Zakarai Ningi also assured L-PRES and the World Bank of the local government’s full support for the initiative. He highlighted ongoing efforts to address cattle route encroachment in the area, noting that a committee has been set up to trace and recover all designated routes.

The L-PRES project continues to underscore its commitment to improving livestock productivity, resilience, and commercialization while fostering community ownership for sustainable development in Bauchi State.
