The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) has launched the ninth edition of its annual quiz competition, aimed at fostering democratic principles among secondary school students in Nigeria.

The event, held at the Bauchi State House of Assembly, was officially opened by the NILDS State Coordinator, Waziri Usman. In his address, Usman explained that the competition is designed to enhance young people’s understanding of the history, practices, and procedures of the legislature, while encouraging a deeper appreciation of civic and democratic governance.

“The quiz serves as a platform for students to engage in critical discussions about Nigeria’s legislative processes, the constitution, and the role of citizens in a democratic system,” he said.

In her remarks, Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Jamila Dahiru, underscored the importance of educating young Nigerians on democratic values, especially in a society where political awareness is often limited to certain segments. She urged participants to adhere to the competition’s rules, emphasizing that education extends beyond the classroom through activities like debates, quizzes, and sports.

Also speaking at the event, the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, represented by the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Dr. Nasiru Ahmed Ala, highlighted the significance of the competition. He described it as an opportunity for students to gain insights into the role of the legislature in Nigeria’s democratic process.

The participating schools included Government Day Secondary School Sabuwar Tiffi Ningi, Government Science Secondary School Toro, Government Day Secondary School Matsango Azare, Government Day Secondary School Ahmed Turaki Azare, Misau Model Secondary School, and Sunshine International School Bauchi.

At the end of the quiz, Misau Model Secondary School emerged victorious, securing the first position. Sunshine International School claimed the second spot, while Government Day Secondary School Sabuwar Tiffi Ningi took third place.
