In a bid to support democracy in Nigeria, the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), a non-governmental organization, has inducted young Nigerians into its Legislative Internship Programme.
The programme is designed to equip recent graduates with a solid understanding of legislative practices, bill drafting, and the overall law-making process in the country.
Speaking at the opening ceremony in Abuja, PLAC Executive Director, Mr. Clement Nwakwo, noted that the initiative, funded by the European Union (EU), aims to strengthen democratic governance in Nigeria. He emphasized that the programme not only enhances the interns’ knowledge of legislative procedures but also provides valuable opportunities for networking with peers from across the country, as well as with legislative aides and staff at the National Assembly.
Mr. Nwakwo further explained that the programme is supported by the European Union’s Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN), highlighting the EU’s commitment to promoting democracy in the country.
He revealed that the interns were carefully selected through a rigorous interview process to ensure that only the best candidates were chosen for the programme. The selected interns will undergo comprehensive training in legislative practices during the course of the internship.
A total of 39 interns, drawn from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, are participating in the programme, which is expected to run for 10 weeks.
Albarka Radio correspondent Aminu Harsanu Guyaba reports that the interns will gain hands-on experience in various legislative activities throughout the duration of the programme.
