Bauchi – The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 40-year-old man, Jibrin Iliya, over allegations of attempted culpable homicide and motorcycle theft in Sabon Layi, Bauchi.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the incident occurred on July 20, 2025, at around 6:00 pm, when the command received information that irate youths in Sabon Layi had confronted two individuals suspected of attacking a commercial motorcyclist.
Police detectives were immediately dispatched to the scene, leading to the arrest of Iliya while an accomplice reportedly fled.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect and his accomplice had conspired to board the motorcycle of Sa’adu Manniru, a 30-year-old resident of Kofar Wambai, Bauchi, with the intention of stealing it. On reaching a prearranged location, the suspects allegedly attacked Manniru with an axe, striking him on the head as he stopped to receive payment.
The victim’s cries attracted the attention of bystanders, who pursued the suspects until police arrived at the scene. The suspects were reportedly attempting to flee with Manniru’s Bajaj motorcycle, registered as KTG 129 UV, before they were apprehended.
During interrogation, Iliya confessed to having been involved in motorcycle theft for three years in collaboration with an accomplice named Lauwali from Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State. He admitted to stealing three motorcycles from different locations in Bauchi and Gombe states, which they sold to a buyer in Gombe. Iliya also disclosed that he personally received N30,000 and N20,000 on separate occasions from the sales.
The police spokesperson stated that investigations are ongoing and assured that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, reiterated the commitment of the command to ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state while urging the public to continue to support the police with timely and credible information.
