Sahelian Youth Forum Condemns State of Emergency in Rivers State

March 18, 2025 2 minutes read

By Muhammad Sani Muazu

The Sahelian Youth Forum for Good Governance and Advocacy has strongly condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, describing it as an alarming overreach that threatens democracy and citizens’ rights.

In a statement signed by its president, Comrade Aminu Harsanu Guyaba, the forum criticized the move, arguing that it undermines the democratic process and raises concerns about its true intent. The group warned that such actions historically erode public trust in elected officials and institutions.

The statement also referenced former Governor Nyesom Wike’s tenure, which it described as controversial and detrimental to Nigeria’s democracy. The forum accused Wike of using state power to suppress opposition, expressing fears that the state of emergency could further deepen political instability in Rivers State.

While acknowledging the frustrations of Rivers residents, the group urged them to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasizing that meaningful change must be achieved through peaceful and democratic means.

The forum also expressed solidarity with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, encouraging him to remain steadfast in defending democratic principles. It further called on the international community, particularly the United Nations, to closely monitor the situation and intervene where necessary to protect the democratic rights of Rivers State residents.

“The Sahelian Youth Forum for Good Governance and Advocacy remains committed to advocating for a Nigeria that respects the rights of all its citizens,” the statement concluded.
