By Muhammad Sani Muazu

The Bauchi State Government, in collaboration with the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), has organized a two-day training program for 100 community livestock service providers to enhance good animal husbandry practices. The event was held at Pali Suite, New GRA, Bauchi, and Azare in Katagum Local Government Area from January 15th to 16th, 2025.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusha’u Isah, emphasized the importance of the training in improving livestock productivity, welfare, and disease prevention at the community level. He described agriculture as a cornerstone of Bauchi State’s economy and reiterated Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed’s unwavering support for the sector.

“His Excellency has shown remarkable commitment to the livestock sector through initiatives such as the annual mass vaccination of livestock, the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development, and training programs like this one,” the Permanent Secretary said. He urged participants to serve as ambassadors for their local governments by stepping down the knowledge gained during the workshop.

The State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Musa Adamu One, also highlighted the project’s objectives and achievements in the state. He stated that the six-year World Bank-supported initiative aims to improve livestock productivity, commercialization, and resilience across targeted value chains.

“Bauchi State met all eligibility criteria for participation in L-PRES due to the Governor’s proactive leadership, including fulfilling the counterpart contribution requirement. The project has conducted several trainings, including Artificial Insemination, One Health for veterinary and environmental workers, and crop residue utilization for livestock feed,” Adamu noted.

He further explained that the ongoing training aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to promote good animal husbandry practices, improve livestock productivity, and enhance the delivery of community-based livestock services.

The training aligns with the L-PRES project’s core components, which include strengthening institutional frameworks, enhancing livestock value chains, and promoting peace and conflict mitigation.

Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity, describing the training as a step towards transforming the livestock sector in Bauchi State.

With continued efforts like this, stakeholders believe that Bauchi State will significantly improve its livestock productivity and achieve sustainable development in agriculture, fulfilling the vision of the “My Bauchi Project Agenda.”
