Population Services International (PSI), in collaboration with Menstrual Health and Hygiene Now (MH-NOW), has organized a two-day training for journalists in Bauchi State to enhance reporting on menstrual health and hygiene issues affecting adolescent girls and young women.

The training, held at Chartwell Hotel, Bauchi, brought together journalists from various media organisations including BRC, Albarka Radio, Channels TV, Leadership, NTA, Jewel Times, and Daily Trust.

Speaking during the workshop, Program Officer of the Menstrual Health and Hygiene Project, Miss Gloria Obeth, explained that the initiative is being implemented in seven states: Bauchi, Sokoto, Kano, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Nasarawa, and Plateau. She noted that PSI is sponsoring the project for two years with the aim of improving menstrual health education and access to menstrual products for women and girls across Nigeria.

Miss Obeth highlighted that journalists play a critical role in creating awareness on menstrual hygiene, promoting access to products, and educating the public on effective menstrual management.

In her presentation, the resource person, Mrs. Zuwaira Baba, stressed the need for parents and guardians to educate children about menstruation early to help tackle gender-based violence and discrimination associated with menstrual health issues.

She added that many adolescent girls and women face challenges in managing menstruation due to community barriers, emphasising the need for collective action to address these issues.

The training is expected to improve media reportage on menstrual health and contribute to broader advocacy for the wellbeing of girls and women in the state and across Nigeria.
