Refuse Heap Worries Bauchi Community, Resorts To Community Effort

Worried by the spate of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in their area which passed serious danger to their health, the residents of Unguwar Sabon Layi Yelwan Tudu Bauchi have come out en mass and evacuated huge files of refuse in the area.

Mai Anguwar Sabon Layi, Philimon Kogi said that they resolved to mobilise for a community effort to evacuate the refuse for self-help and to guard against the outbreak of diseases, especially water-borne diseases in the area as the rainy season approaches.

He called on residents of the area to develop a proper habit of waste disposal to safeguard the good work put out to make the area clean for the good of all.

Mr Kogi said the community is making effort to designate a refuse dumping site to centralise waste collection in the area, thereby making it easy to evacuate same at an appropriate time interval.

Chairman Yelwan Tudu Market, Usman Sulaiman said traders operating in the market are ready to give all the necessary support to keep the area clean and life-friendly for all and sundry.

He assured of the full participation of his members in the exercise both physically and materially.

Some residents of the area who speak to WikkTimes said they are worried by the huge presence of uncollected refuse in the area, especially for the health and general wellbeing of under-five children in the area.

They maintained that with the recent outbreak of Lassa Fever in the state, if not evacuated, the refuse will serve as a hatching ground for rats, the career of the Lassa virus.
