The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old trader, Mamuda Zakari Yau, popularly known as Wadata, for allegedly killing a commercial motorcyclist and stealing his motorcycle in Bauchi metropolis.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the incident occurred on Wednesday, 16th October 2025, around 9:00 p.m., at Unguwan Dr. Sulaiman Adamu Quarters, near the old airport area of Bauchi.

According to the statement, Yau allegedly stabbed Basiru Mohammed, aged 25, a commercial motorcyclist from Zango Sa’idawa, with a knife during a confrontation before fleeing the scene with the victim’s red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number NNG 813 UM.

Wakil said the victim managed to raise an alarm before collapsing, prompting residents to chase the suspect, who later abandoned the motorcycle and escaped.

A team of detectives from the ‘E’ Division, Yelwa, was immediately deployed to the scene. The victim was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains have been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Following investigative leads, the suspect was eventually arrested after detectives recovered his mobile phone at the scene. Upon interrogation, Yau reportedly confessed to the crime, claiming he committed the act due to financial hardship linked to his plan to marry a third wife.

Items recovered from the scene include one Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, a blood-stained knife, a pair of shoes, and an Android phone belonging to the suspect.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution
