The International Day for Peace 2024 was marked with a series of events organized by Ambassadors for Peace International in Bauchi. The event, held under the theme “Cultivating a Culture of Peace,” brought together stakeholders, scholars, and community leaders to promote peaceful coexistence and address the root causes of conflict.
Speaking at the event, Professor Hassan Barau Singry from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, delivered a keynote lecture highlighting the global, continental, and national challenges to peace. In his presentation, titled “Cultivating a Culture of Peace,” Prof. Singry emphasized the importance of understanding the underlying causes of conflict in order to propose effective solutions. “We need to identify the major causes that lead to conflict and violence. If we can do this, we can propose solutions to prevent future conflicts,” he explained.
He further stated that promoting peace goes hand in hand with advocating for human rights. “We must replace discrimination with equality and encourage collective efforts to maintain peace. Without peace, there can be no development,” Prof. Singry added.
The event was part of a week-long series of activities designed to raise awareness about peaceful coexistence…..
The co’ordinator of Ambassadors for Peace International Paul Daniel noted that the activities included advocacy visits, a meeting with His business state, and a public lecture. “We also held Friday prayers at Imam Mallam Hassan Zango Mosque, and tomorrow we will conduct interdenominational prayers. Next week, we plan to visit various communities to continue advocating for peace,” Daniel said.
The message of the day resonated with the need for lasting peace and harmony, as it was underscored that without peace, governments would struggle to provide necessary social amenities and infrastructure. The organizers called on all citizens to embrace peaceful coexistence, reiterating that peace is the foundation for sustainable development.
The International Day for Peace is an annual event established by the United Nations General Assembly to promote awareness and advocacy for peace across the globe. The event in Bauchi underscored the collective responsibility of citizens, governments, and international bodies in maintaining and promoting peace.
