The Bauchi State Commissioner for Natural Resources, Muhammad Maiwada Bello, has described Governor Bala Mohammed as a bold advocate for the marginalized, especially in northern Nigeria. Speaking to newsmen in Bauchi, Bello defended the governor’s recent criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubuâs economic reforms, stating that the governor’s remarks reflect the genuine concerns of the people he governs.
âThe governor has always been a voice for the voiceless, and his recent comments about the Federal Governmentâs policies are consistent with his commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, particularly in the North,â Bello said.
Governor Bala Mohammed recently sparked national conversation during a meeting with Sheikh Sani Jingir, National Chairman of the Council of Ulama Jamaâatu Izalatul Bidâah WaâIkamatis Sunnah. During the meeting, the governor expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s handling of economic reforms, particularly tax policies that he said disproportionately affect northern states.
Quoting the governor, Bello explained, âGovernor Bala Mohammed noted that the Northâs fragile economic base, which heavily relies on federal allocations, makes it particularly vulnerable to the new tax reforms. He stated that these policies are putting both the region and Nigerians at large under undue strain.â
Bello reiterated the governorâs concerns that the reforms lack consideration for the realities of ordinary Nigerians. âThe governor has always prioritized fairness and equity in governance. He believes that no region or group should be unfairly burdened by policies that do not account for the economic disparities across the country,â Bello stated.
When asked about the Presidencyâs response to the governorâs comments, Bello dismissed allegations of political grandstanding. âThe Presidency may have described the governorâs position as âirresponsible politics,â but the reality is that Governor Bala Mohammed is simply speaking the truth. His primary concern is the welfare of his people, and he will not shy away from voicing their frustrations,â the commissioner said.
The commissioner also addressed the Presidencyâs claim that Bauchi State has not effectively utilized its federal allocations. âIt is unfair to divert attention from the pressing national issue by questioning how we use our resources. Governor Bala Mohammed has always been transparent and focused on poverty alleviation and economic development. His administration has implemented numerous programs aimed at improving the lives of Bauchi residents, despite limited resources,â Bello argued.
Bello further noted that the governorâs call for collaboration with religious and community leaders, such as Sheikh Jingir, reflects his desire for constructive solutions rather than mere criticisms. âGovernor Bala Mohammed believes in inclusive governance and is open to working with anyone who can help bring meaningful change to Nigeriaâs current economic challenges,â he said.
The commissioner concluded by urging the Federal Government to reevaluate its economic policies. âThis is not about politics; itâs about survival. The Federal Government needs to listen to voices like that of Governor Bala Mohammed, who represent the struggles of ordinary Nigerians. Only through collaboration and sensitivity to the plight of the people can we achieve equitable national development,â Bello emphasized.
Governor Bala Mohammedâs stance continues to garner support from those who see him as a fearless advocate for justice and fairness, cementing his reputation as a leader who places the needs of his people above political expediency.
