The Bauchi State Commissioner for Natural Resources, Muhammad Maiwada Bello, has described Governor Bala Mohammed as a bold advocate for the marginalized, especially in northern Nigeria. Speaking to newsmen in Bauchi, Bello defended the governor’s recent criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms, stating that the governor’s remarks reflect the genuine concerns of the people he governs.
“The governor has always been a voice for the voiceless, and his recent comments about the Federal Government’s policies are consistent with his commitment to the welfare of Nigerians, particularly in the North,” Bello said.
Governor Bala Mohammed recently sparked national conversation during a meeting with Sheikh Sani Jingir, National Chairman of the Council of Ulama Jama’atu Izalatul Bid’ah Wa’Ikamatis Sunnah. During the meeting, the governor expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s handling of economic reforms, particularly tax policies that he said disproportionately affect northern states.
Quoting the governor, Bello explained, “Governor Bala Mohammed noted that the North’s fragile economic base, which heavily relies on federal allocations, makes it particularly vulnerable to the new tax reforms. He stated that these policies are putting both the region and Nigerians at large under undue strain.”
Bello reiterated the governor’s concerns that the reforms lack consideration for the realities of ordinary Nigerians. “The governor has always prioritized fairness and equity in governance. He believes that no region or group should be unfairly burdened by policies that do not account for the economic disparities across the country,” Bello stated.
When asked about the Presidency’s response to the governor’s comments, Bello dismissed allegations of political grandstanding. “The Presidency may have described the governor’s position as ‘irresponsible politics,’ but the reality is that Governor Bala Mohammed is simply speaking the truth. His primary concern is the welfare of his people, and he will not shy away from voicing their frustrations,” the commissioner said.
The commissioner also addressed the Presidency’s claim that Bauchi State has not effectively utilized its federal allocations. “It is unfair to divert attention from the pressing national issue by questioning how we use our resources. Governor Bala Mohammed has always been transparent and focused on poverty alleviation and economic development. His administration has implemented numerous programs aimed at improving the lives of Bauchi residents, despite limited resources,” Bello argued.
Bello further noted that the governor’s call for collaboration with religious and community leaders, such as Sheikh Jingir, reflects his desire for constructive solutions rather than mere criticisms. “Governor Bala Mohammed believes in inclusive governance and is open to working with anyone who can help bring meaningful change to Nigeria’s current economic challenges,” he said.
The commissioner concluded by urging the Federal Government to reevaluate its economic policies. “This is not about politics; it’s about survival. The Federal Government needs to listen to voices like that of Governor Bala Mohammed, who represent the struggles of ordinary Nigerians. Only through collaboration and sensitivity to the plight of the people can we achieve equitable national development,” Bello emphasized.
Governor Bala Mohammed’s stance continues to garner support from those who see him as a fearless advocate for justice and fairness, cementing his reputation as a leader who places the needs of his people above political expediency.
