As we commemorate World Ranger Day on July 31, 2025, I want to pay tribute to the dedicated rangers of Yankari Game Reserve in Bauchi, Nigeria. Spanning 2,244 km² of vibrant savannah, Yankari is a haven for Nigeria’s largest elephant population and over 350 bird species, among other wildlife.
For over a decade, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has empowered these rangers to protect our planet’s heritage. With unshakable resolve, they face armed poachers, rugged landscapes, and human-wildlife conflicts. Their efforts have yielded remarkable results, including the cessation of elephant poaching since May 2015 and the arrest of over 50 poachers between 2019 and now.
The WCS’s transformative training programs have been instrumental in this success. Partnering with experts like Conservation Outcomes, we have provided international-standard training that equips rangers with essential skills in physical fitness, first aid, human rights, and self-defense. The SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) training has enabled our rangers to master advanced tools, including night-vision goggles, walkie-talkies, and digital patrol systems, facilitating real-time monitoring of wildlife and threats.
To date, over 60 eco-guards and rangers have been trained, and our SMART Online Live Training in 2025 continues to sharpen their skills, improving patrol accuracy and tackling challenges like human-elephant conflict. These programs not only enhance capabilities but also boost ranger morale, fostering pride in their mission to protect Yankari’s biodiversity.

As someone who works closely with these rangers, I am inspired daily by their courage and sacrifice. They are my heroes, risking everything to preserve Yankari’s wildlife for future generations. On World Ranger Day, I invite you to join me in celebrating their legacy and supporting WCS Nigeria’s mission. Together, we can ensure Yankari remains a thriving sanctuary for Nigeria’s wildlife and a symbol of hope for a greener world.
