Young Leaders Network Embarks on 400-Tree Planting Campaign in Gwallameji

By Muhammad Sani Muazu

In a move aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, the Young Leaders Network (YLN) has embarked on a 400-tree planting campaign in the Gwallameji community of Bauchi State.

The initiative, which enjoyed the support of the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA), the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, and other civil society partners, began on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Government Day Secondary School (GDSS), Gwallameji.

During the flag-off, students of the school actively participated by planting trees within the premises in what organizers described as both a practical and educational exercise. Each student symbolically adopted a tree, naming it after themselves to signify personal responsibility for its growth and survival.

The campaign continued on Saturday, October 25, 2025, with an additional 300 trees planted within the community and along the newly constructed Gwallameji–Doka Road, built under the administration of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.

Speaking during the exercise, Mrs. Noadiah Babas, YLN’s Program Manager on Climate Impact and Resilience, said the initiative represents more than a tree planting activity—it is a demonstration of the group’s long-term commitment to climate action and community resilience.

“For us, this is not just an activity. It is a loud statement of our commitment to climate action, community resilience, and a greener Bauchi,” she stated.

Also speaking, the Director General of BASEPA, Dr. Mahmud Muhammad Bose, commended YLN for its environmental advocacy and pledged the agency’s continued collaboration and support for such initiatives.

The Green Gwallameji Tree Planting Exercise forms part of YLN’s ongoing Youth Climate Action Fellowship, a program designed to empower young people to take practical steps toward environmental protection and sustainable development in their communities.
