Digital Literacy Program Empowers Farmers in Bauchi

By Zainab Kasim Ibrahim

A groundbreaking collaboration aimed at enhancing digital literacy among farmers in Bauchi State is making significant strides.

The initiative, named “Digital Literacy for Farmers,” is a joint effort between the Association for Small Scale Agro Producers in Nigeria (ASSAPIN), Z-Teach Foundation, with support from the international organization 48%.

Amina Bala Jubrin, the Executive Director of ASSAPIN Bauchi State chapter, elaborated on the initiative’s objectives and impact. “This collaboration focuses on training farmers on digital literacy. We aim to teach them how to use smartphones to enhance production by accessing information on agronomical practices and marketplaces, and networking with other farmers globally.

This will enable them to exchange ideas and address issues in their farms more effectively,” she said.

The program includes the introduction of various applications that assist farmers in identifying crop diseases and providing solutions. “Farmers can now use apps to diagnose plant diseases simply by pointing their smartphone cameras at the affected crops. The apps provide instant analysis and advice on treatment. This digital training is transformative for our farmers, enabling them to network, sell their products online, and recognize genuine input dealers,” Jibrin added.

the Executive Director of Z-Tech Foundation, Zubairu Jibrin highlighted the foundation’s role in bridging the digital divide. “Our goal is to promote digital literacy among local farmers, equipping them with the skills needed to improve their farming practices using modern technology. We have trained about 50 farmers so far and provided them with smartphones to ensure they can apply what they’ve learned effectively,” Jibril stated.

Jibrin emphasized the importance of online safety as part of the training. “We also brought in experts from the Nigerian Data Protection Commission to educate the farmers on protecting their personal data. Many farmers are vulnerable to online scams due to their limited knowledge of digital safety,” he said.

The program’s approach includes training representatives from various organizations who then disseminate the knowledge to their groups. This method ensures wider reach and impact. “Although we couldn’t provide smartphones to all farmers, each group has at least one member with access to these tools. This member shares the information with others, ensuring the entire group benefits from the training,” Jubrin explained.

The initiative’s ripple effect is expected to be substantial. “If each trained farmer educates at least one other person, the knowledge will spread exponentially. This peer-to-peer training model could significantly enhance digital literacy among farmers in Bauchi,” Jubril concluded.

The “Digital Literacy for Farmers” program stands out as a pioneering effort in Bauchi, setting a precedent for future initiatives aimed at integrating technology into agriculture to improve productivity and sustainability.
