The Young Leaders Network has convened a two-day Stakeholders’ Roundtable to discuss the implementation of the Bauchi State Child Protection Law 2023, emphasizing collaboration and strategic action to safeguard children’s rights.
Declaring the session open, Mr. Seun Justin, Executive Director of the Young Leaders Network, welcomed participants and encouraged productive deliberations. He underscored the significance of multi-sectoral cooperation in ensuring the law’s full implementation, stressing the need for concerted efforts to enhance child welfare in Bauchi State.
A key voice at the roundtable, Barrister Amina Garuba, advocated for the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Social Welfare in Bauchi State. She noted that the current Social Welfare unit faces an increasing burden in handling child protection cases, arguing that a standalone ministry would improve service delivery and strengthen child rights protection.
Participants reviewed key provisions of the law, particularly those addressing child welfare, protection against exploitation, and child justice administration. Barrister Garuba led an in-depth analysis, highlighting sections prioritizing children’s best interests, while emphasizing the role of community leaders, law enforcement, and educators in ensuring effective implementation.
At the conclusion of the roundtable, a communiqué outlining key recommendations was read by Christiana Ajang Nyam, an SS2 student from Government Girls’ College, Bauchi.
The communiqué called for:
Increased government funding for child protection initiatives.
The establishment of child protection units within law enforcement agencies.
Fast-tracking child-related cases in the judiciary.
A more proactive role of the media in raising awareness about child protection issues.
Continued advocacy and grassroots sensitization by civil society organizations.
Participants reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the Bauchi State Child Protection Law 2023, agreeing on the necessity of sustained collaboration among all sectors to create a safer environment for children.
The roundtable brought together civil society organizations, law enforcement agencies, educators, and media representatives, all pledging to ensure that the legal protections for children are actively enforced through continuous engagement and policy implementation.
