As the world commemorates International Women’s Day 2025, Barrister Gambo Yakubu Wakili, a legal practitioner and Executive Director of WE AID Initiative, has emphasized the need to strengthen women to build a better society. She made this call during an event themed “Women Inspiring Women”, which brought together distinguished women to share their stories and inspire others.
Speaking at the gathering, Barrister Wakili stressed that inspiring women is fundamental to achieving gender equality and eliminating gender-based violence (GBV). She highlighted that women play a crucial role in shaping families and communities, and their empowerment leads to a more just and equitable society. According to her, breaking barriers that hinder women’s progress—such as limited access to healthcare, education, entrepreneurship opportunities, and political representation, as well as gender-based violence—is essential for achieving true equality.
“Strengthening women is not just about giving them opportunities; it is about creating a society where they can thrive and reach their full potential,” she said. She further explained that when women are inspired, they make informed decisions that benefit their families, communities, and society at large. She called for a collective effort to dismantle the obstacles preventing women from reaching their full potential, urging stakeholders to work together in advancing women’s rights and welfare.
Barrister Wakili also emphasized the importance of treating women with respect and empathy, whether in workplaces, homes, or places of worship. She urged society to recognize women’s contributions and support their efforts in all aspects of life.
On strategies to address violence against women and girls, she noted that WE AID Initiative is actively providing life skills training to women, helping them amplify their voices and equipping them with the tools to navigate challenges and seize opportunities. By offering these support systems, the organization aims to reduce vulnerabilities and enable women to build fulfilling lives.
The event attracted women from various organizations, humanitarian agencies, government bodies, and the media. It featured inspirational talks by women who have overcome challenges, as well as recognition of women making significant strides in Bauchi State. Participants discussed ways to accelerate gender equality, aligning with the IWD 2025 theme: “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality.”
As the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2025, the call for gender equality remains urgent. Advocates like Barrister Gambo Wakili continue to reinforce the message that inspiring women is the key to a more inclusive, just, and prosperous society.
