Borno State Assembly Clears 19 Commissioner Nominees

Borno State House of Assembly has cleared 19 out of the 20 commissioner nominees sent to it by governor Babagana Umara Zulum.

The Speaker of the house, Abdulkarim Lawan, while addressing journalists in Maiduguri on Saturday, recalled that Zulum, last week, sent the list of 20 nominees to the house for legislative approval.

He explained that the screening exercise started on June 21, with nine nominees and another 10 were screened the following day.

Lawan said, “pursuant to the provision of section 192 (2) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the honourable House has received the executive request in good faith and has since confirmed fit for appointment.”

“With the cordial relationship that exists between the executive, legislative and the judiciary, I want to assure the good people of Borno State that the house will immediately send the screened list to the governor for their swearing-in as soon as he comes back from his official trip to Sudan,” the speaker added.

He, however, noted that the only female nominee, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, the former Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, was part of the team that traveled with the governor and could not appear for the screening.

The speaker stated that when she is back, she will appear before the house for screening. Among the 20 names submitted by the governor, 18 nominees are former commissioners he dissolved in May.

WikkiTimes recalls that governor Zulum had on May 5 dissolved the State Executive Council for the first time since he assumed office in May 2019.

The approval of the dissolution came a few weeks prior to the primary elections of political parties which was aimed at allowing interested politicians to fly their party’s flag in the 2023 general elections.
